WELCOME TO INSTITUTO DA CRIANÇA (THE CHILDREN’S INSTITUTE)

Our Mission
"Promote the sustainability of social projects and actions, offering administrative, financial and legal support. Contribute with this support to the human, social and economic development of children, adolescents and their families in order to transform the reality in which they live".

Our Vision
"To be an agent of change in the construction of an egalitarian society, based on respect for citizenship and an improved quality of life for all".

About Us
We are a non-profit, non-governmental organization that supports projects for children (such as daycare centers, homes for the disabled, aid for low income communities and a parental advice and citizenship awareness program), in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

The history of the Institute is based on taking responsibility for institutions and projects and transforming them gradually through administrative, legal and financial support

What We Do
We provide administrative, financial and legal support for the supported projects, which are aimed at children – daycare centers, homes for the disabled, aid for low income communities and a parental advice and citizenship awareness program.
All the projects assumed so far have involved both direct and indirect support for at-risk children and adolescents, and also include working together with parents. The relationship with each project varies according to the context in which it is presented to the Institute and how developed it is.

How We Operate
The Institute consists of a Board of Directors, Collaborators, Volunteers and Partners.
Our team and volunteers meet every week to discuss problems with projects and to propose new partnerships. In this way, we manage to find solutions and ideas to make a difference, to transform lives.

Why We Do It
Because we want to be agents of change in the construction of an egalitarian society, based on respect for citizenship and the improvement of the quality of life of all.
We believe that by working with children we can construct citizens and integrate them in society.

Background
The Institute was founded in 1997 by two brothers, Pedro and Carlos Werneck, who since 1994 had worked with a group of friends supporting projects focused on at-risk children and adolescents.
After a few years, the institute decided to improve the type of aid provided, which until then had only provided direct material assistance, in order to find a more efficient form of integrating children in society.
A strategy was drafted to offer these families protection and opportunities for human, social and economic development. Furthermore, when more specialized treatment was needed the Institute began to offer aid in the socio-educational and therapeutic areas.
The Institute currently works with seven social projects, such as daycare centers, homes for disabled persons suffering from cerebral palsy and aid for low income communities. It also has a parental advice and citizenship awareness program in Rio de Janeiro state and has established a partnership with the Brazil Foundation (www.brazilfoundation.org), an American NGO based in New York that supports social projects in Brazil.
This partnership has been fundamental in creating the Children's Call to Action, which started in 2005 and allows citizens resident in the US to make donations to the Institute and to obtain fiscal benefits from their donations.
The Institute is audited by PriceWaterhouse Coopers
