WELCOME TO INSTITUTO DA CRIANÇA
ABOUT US
Instituto da Criança is a NGO dedicated to the concept of social entrepreneurship. It’s purpose is to answer the question of how each of us can contribute to the process of social change and sustainable development.
It began its activities in 1994 and developed from an informal organization into a fully recognized non-profit OSCIP (Civil Society Organization of Public Interest). IC acts as a social incubator for new programs and institutions. It also supports existing social institutions, organizes educational programs and offers consultancy in corporate social responsibility for companies in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.
OUR MISSION
To promote the sustainability of social projects and activities by offering administrative, financial and legal support and thus contribute to the human, social and economic development of children, teenagers and their families in order to deeply transform their lives.
OUR VISION
To become an agent of change in the construction of an egalitarian society based on respect for citizenship and an improved quality of life for all.
OUR GOALS
- To educate citizens and integrate them into society;
- To facilitate access to education;
- To create social awareness regarding the importance of equal opportunities;
- To encourage companies to invest in the social sector.
WHAT WE DO
Currently Instituto da Criança supports 9 social initiatives (shelters, day care centers, a support center for victims of cerebral palsy) and runs 3 programs: Espaço Cidadão (“Citizen Forum”), an educational program aiming at orienting parents, Hora da Leitura (“Time To Read”), an extracurricular program to encourage reading among children and teenagers in poor areas and Pense Alto (“Think Big”), a professional education program for teenagers interested in a career in sales.
Our projects
HOW WE DO IT
- We receive permanent and sporadic donations from individual and legal entities;
- We promote and encourage the organization of fundraising events dedicated to IC;
- We raise funds abroad supported by Children’s Call to Action, an initiative founded in the United States in 2005, which offers financial benefits to donors in cooperation with Brazil Foundation (www.brazilfoundation.org), a New York-based organization whose mission is to raise funds for programs promoting social change in Brazil.
All processes are monitored in regular meetings.
TRANSPARENCY
All activities are carried out with complete transparency, including annual audits by PricewaterhouseCoopers. The auditor reports are available on the IC website, where donors and partners can monitor IC´s financial management.
HISTORY
Instituto da Criança was founded in 1997 by two brothers, Pedro and Carlos Werneck, who had been working with a group of friends to organize activities and support projects aimed at helping children and teenagers in difficult social conditions since 1994.
After a few years, they decided to improve and extend their support, which had until then been mainly financial, and work towards a more efficient way of integrating children into society.
